JOHN TERRY will be licking his lips now that he doesn’t have to put up with Wayne Rooney for 90 minutes on Saturday. Terry will be gutted to see his fellow England player crocked with ankle ligament damage but, being honest, he won’t lose THAT much sleep over it. Rooney will be back for the World Cup – which is the one reason why Terry will not be too bothered – and the Chelsea captain will be much happier to only have to put up with Dimitar Berbatov. The Bulgarian is a fine player and can score goals when given the chance, but there is no way he is the same attacking threat as the Scouser. Rooney can score goals and make goals from all over the pitch. He scores different types of goals as well. Whether it’s a 30-yard special, a tap-in or a header, there is no-one better in the Premier League at the moment. Berbatov does not get behind defenders like Rooney does, he will not test Terry’s skill in the same way and he can’t match Terry physically. Terry thought he would be in for a tough and bruising contest at Old Trafford because, although he is small, Rooney flies into tackles like the hardest defender out there. Berbatov does not – and that is why Terry will be thankful for Rooney’s injury woe as long as it clears up in time for South Africa. It could all fall nicely in the Three Lions’ favour. If Rooney is out for four to six weeks, he can get some valuable rest as the World Cup approaches. And because the World Cup is still a while away, he should still have the chance to get back to full fitness once his ankle is sorted and get back into smoking-hot form. Sir Alex Ferguson might not be happy with what happened the other night – but England’s fans might look back on it as a blessing in disguise. I RECKON if Man United manage to beat Chelsea tomorrow, that is the league done and dusted. The mathematics might say different and there may still be enough points to play for, but Chelsea will be so badly affected by the loss that I can’t see a way back. To lose to United, without Rooney, would rip Chelsea apart mentally and Carlo Ancelotti would have an impossible job trying to drag them back.
THE injury to their skipper Cesc Fabregas is a hammer blow to Arsenal’s hopes of winning the Premier League. But to be honest, I reckon they have only been in with a chance because the other big boys have not been on fire all year. Arsenal have played some brilliant football and are a joy to watch, but they don’t have the strength in depth to do it this season. And they have been helped because United and Chelsea have let them back into the title race rather than killing them off months ago.
