ALEX FERGUSON will be lifting the Premier League trophy yet again – and the Manchester United boss will be saying a big thank-you to Liverpool. Fergie is a past master when it comes to handling the huge pressure at this stage of the season. But the balance of power in this season’s title race will tilt United’s way at Anfield of all places. Liverpool fans will hate to think their team will play a major part in United collecting a 19th championship. They will hate the fact that they will lose their record of 18 titles to the team from down the East Lancs Road. But for all the talk about how much Liverpool can’t stand United, they have to look after their own interests first against Chelsea on Sunday. And that means they have to play for pride, at least, to keep alive their remaining hopes of finishing fourth and getting back into the Champions League. That will not mean a gung-ho approach from cautious Rafa Benitez because he knows that all-out attack will leave them wide open to Chelsea’s brilliant counter-attacking. I don’t think they’ve got enough to beat Chelsea – especially with Fernando Torres missing from the side. And I don’t think they are going to make it into the top four.
Laugh
But I do know they will dig in and make it very, very tough for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. That will be enough earn them a point and give United the chance to go top by beating Sunderland a couple of hours later. And from that point there’ll be no stopping United because there is absolutely chance of them losing to Stoke on the last day of the season. There is simply no way Fergie will allow that to happen. There is nobody better at seeing his side over the line and, while he will be shitting it inside, he keeps calm on the outside. And it always make me laugh the way he winds up his rivals at this stage of the season. They all say they don’t take any notice of what Fergie says but they always do... instead of just f***in’ ignoring him like they should! He still has a massive influence at Old Trafford and everyone there looks to him for direction. He’s like an 18- year-old with the enthusiasm he still has for winning – and that spreads to the players, the staff, the fans and everyone at the club. While United will be celebrating, on the other side of Manchester I reckon City will lose out to Spurs for fourth place. City have had a brilliant season and those people who say they should have done even better after spending so much are talking rubbish.
Miracle
But they face two tough games against Aston Villa and Spurs before the final match with West Ham. Next year it could be different if they spend even more money. Carlos Tevez has been one of the buys of the season – and if they get Torres from Liverpool this summer they can challenge for the title. If I was the City owners I would break the bank to get him because if you played Torres alongside Tevez it would be incredible. But this will be Spurs’ year because they have the easier run-in. If they get fourth, Harry Redknapp will have worked a miracle and this will be one of their best seasons. And if Harry gets the money he’ll want, they could be running Arsenal close to be top dogs in north London. There are some decent teams up at the top and this has been the most exciting season for a while. You would have predicted the top two at the start of the season – but they haven’t had it all their own way. And that’s got to be healthy for the game.
