Scotland’s kings of indie The Teenage Fanclub have had a chequered musical career, one time support band to Nirvana, they’ve built a legion of devoted fans on both sides of hadrian’s wall, not to mention the world over with their blend of summery Byrds-esque pop with a touch of serrated grunge.
They also provided the soundtrack to Match Of The Day’s 95/96 Goal Of The Month with their excellent This Is Music taken from the seminal Bandwagonesque album.
Now, they’re set to send music fans into a frenzy with their brand new album Shadows.
It has been 5 long years since their last album, 'Man-Made', was released to universal acclaim and a follow up has been keenly anticipated ever since.
The proceedings are kicked off with ‘Sometimes I Don't Need To Believe In Anything’, a trademark TFC track packed with vocal harmonies and jingling guitars.
Before long it’s business as usual with one exquisite composition following the next.
‘The Fall’, ‘Into The City’ and ‘Shock And Awe’ are some of the best examples of Blake and McGinley’s effortless anthemic song writing to date and ‘When I Still Have Thee’ is as well structured and moving an indie ballad as you’re ever likely to hear.
There’s never really been a band to imitate Teenage Fanclub’s sound, which makes Shadows a more-than welcomed change from the current crop of dance saturated indie bands clogging up the airwaves at the moment.
The album wraps up with the optimistic ‘Today Never Ends’ and is sure to leave fans and TFC virgins alike hungry to hear more.
Just don’t leave it 5 years this time lads!
9/10 - CARLO.
